Four Cellar Doors and Lunch at Yering Station, 1838

Ten hours, eleven people at most, and four cellar doors picked with an argument behind them: one large producer, one mid-sized, one boutique, and one historic, so that by the end you have a sense of the region rather than four versions of the same thing. De Bortoli opens it, on 450 acres of vineyard hills, with the estate and premium wines and Noble One, the dessert wine the estate is best known for. Cheese is paired with the tasting. Yering Station is the lunch stop and the historic one: the first vineyard planted in the Yarra Valley, in 1838. You taste estate and reserve wines in the old cellar door and then eat an a la carte main course in the modern glass restaurant, with a glass of wine and a coffee. Coldstream Hills covers the Valley favourites and a standout sparkling. Medhurst, a boutique producer, closes the day with its table wines. The drive out is an hour, through bushland, vineyards and farmland, which is a good part of the point. Eleven people at most, in English, with the driver and guide, an air-conditioned vehicle, bottled water, lunch and hotel pick-up and drop-off from selected hotels. Extra alcohol is available to buy. A collapsible wheelchair with removable wheels can be carried if somebody is travelling with you to help board and disembark.
