Melbourne

The Queen Victoria Market covers seven hectares, which is enough to be intimidating if you do not know where to start. Two hours with somebody who does solves that. The tastings depend on what is good that morning, which is the correct way to run a market tour, but usually include fresh seafood, grilled peppered kangaroo, a selection of local cheese, fresh dips and seasonal gelati. The kangaroo is the one to come for. It is lean, dark and closer to venison than to beef, and outside Australia it is nearly impossible to get. Beyond the eating, the tour is practical: how to shop here, what the unusual ingredients are and what to do with them, the market's history, and introductions to the traders themselves, who have in many cases been on the same stall for decades. You go home with a market tote bag. Two hours, ten people per guide, in English. Two things to know. This tour cannot accommodate individual dietary requirements: it is a tasting tour and the tastings are what they are. And in line with the market's sustainability policy there is no bottled water, so bring your own and use the refill stations around the site. Wheelchair accessible throughout, service animals allowed, prams fine. Comfortable shoes.
