Seven Kilometres of Fitzroy and Collingwood, on Foot
Three hours and nearly seven kilometres, which is the most walking of any food tour in this city, and the reason is geography: Fitzroy and Collingwood are where Melbourne actually eats, and they are not on top of each other. It starts with coffee, in one of the better places, and introductions. Then a Fitzroy sandwich, and the guide is upfront that a sandwich does not sound like destination food. Look at the queue outside these shops and reconsider. Gertrude Street next, and the walk is part of the tour rather than the gap between stops: a vegan deli, an ice creamery, and on Saturdays a hot sauce tasting. Collingwood after that, for what the guide calls the most impressive vegan restaurant in Melbourne, a local bakery, a bookshop, and a run of cheesecakes. Then back to Fitzroy for tacos and a drink somewhere with a view worth the climb. Ten people at most, in English, with all the food and drink and the guide. Wear proper shoes. There are rests, but seven kilometres is seven kilometres.

Fitzroy
We meet on the footpath directly behind the number 11 tram stop, on the park side. This stop is just outside the free tram zone; from the CBD it is a short walk, and Parliament station is nearby if you are coming by train.
Fitzroy
First a stop for coffee and to get to know each other. With this many good options around, you are taken to one of the best.
Fitzroy
Next, one of Fitzroy's many famous sandwiches. Eating a sandwich does not sound like destination food, but wait until you see how busy these shops are.
Gertrude Street
To make room for more food, we walk. Over the next fifteen minutes we go through some of the best streets in the area, with time to stop and look. This stretch takes in a local vegan deli, an ice creamery, and on Saturdays a hot sauce tasting.
Collingwood
In Collingwood we stop at the most impressive vegan restaurant in Melbourne, a local bakery, a bookshop, and a range of cheesecakes.
Fitzroy
Back to Fitzroy to finish, with tacos and a drink somewhere with the best view in the city.
Fitzroy
The tour ends on the corner of Brunswick Street and Nicholson Street. You can take the number 11 tram straight back into the city, or it is a five to ten minute walk to where we started.
