San Sebastian

Three and a half hours, at least four stops, twelve people at most, and by the end you will have eaten the equivalent of a full meal. You meet in front of the city hall, which was built in 1882 as a casino and only became municipal offices after gambling was banned in the 1920s. The first thing you eat is the gilda, and it is the right place to start because it is where pintxos start: a green guindilla pepper, an anchovy and a green olive on one stick, invented in a bar here in the 1940s. Spicy, salty and sharp in one bite, and everything on every counter in the city is a variation on that idea. Behind the Plaza de la Constitución, a square ringed with nineteenth-century arcades and balconies numbered from when it served as a bullring, there is a specialist shop for jamón de cebo, tasted properly with bread. Then a stroll through the Casco Viejo and a selection of gourmet pintxos, each paired with something Basque: cider, txakoli, a Rioja red, or patxarán, the sloe liqueur made by steeping wild blackthorn berries in anise spirit and drunk cold after eating. The walk ends near what is thought to be the oldest church in the city, early sixteenth century and Basque Gothic, with the cheesecake. Basque cheesecake is not the American kind: no base, no gelatine, baked hot enough to scorch the top, and the burnt surface is the flavour rather than a mistake. English-speaking guide, though they may switch between English and Spanish. Water and fixed amounts of alcohol included for over-18s, with non-alcoholic options. Vegetarian versions available; contact them before booking about restrictions. Severe allergies cannot be accommodated. Moderate walking. Stops vary with the season.

You will start your culinary adventure in front of the city hall, in the heart of San Sebastian. You will meet your local expert right in front of this majestic building, that used to be a Casino when it was built at first, in 1882. Then you will head to the first stop to try the first ever-invented Pintxo! This pintxo consists of three simple yet flavorful components: a green guindilla pepper, a briny anchovy, and a tart green olive. Skewered together, these ingredients create a harmonious blend of spicy, salty, and tangy flavors.

  4. Konstituzio Plaza

Konstituzio Plaza is located right in the center of the Old Town and it's surrounded by XIX century buildings and a rectangular porch, under which you will find bars, pubs and restaurants where locals enjoy local cuisine and spend their time together. Right behind the square you will find a delicious boutique, specialized in one of the most popular Spanish ingredients: Jamón. Enjoy a tasting of traditional Spanish ham, such as Jamón de Cebo. Often enjoyed as part of a tapas spread, these cold cuts pair wonderfully with crusty bread and a glass of wine, making them a favorite among locals and visitors alike.

  5. After a stroll around the old town

After a stroll around the old town, also known as Casco Viejo, enjoy a selection of local gourmet pintxos and discover the flavours of Basque Country! All our Pintxos are paired with traditional Basque wine and liquors such as cider, txakoli wine, red wine from the region of Rioja and Patxaran, the most typical Basque sloe berry liquor.

We will end our food tour near what is thought to be the oldest church in town, built in the early XVI century in Basque Gothic style. In an eatery near this architectural masterpiece, you will try the famous Basque cheesecake. It's a true symbol of the Basque Country. This cheesecake is very different to American cheesecake. It is very creamy, almost like custard and it is burnt on the outside, which adds a bit of caramel flavour to it.

  7. San Juan Kalea, 15, Donostia / San Sebastián

Please, bear in mind that the end point may slightly change according to the availability of our partners.
