Medellín

The surprise is the geography. There is a working organic coffee farm twenty-five minutes from El Poblado, inside the city's own boundaries, surrounded by gardens, and most people in Medellin do not know it is there. You walk the plantation, pick cherries by hand, and get the explanation of why Colombian coffee is what it is: the altitude, the shade, the picking selectively rather than stripping the branch. Then you drink a cup of what the farm produced. The second half is where the tour earns its price. A specialty micro-roastery and lab in Itagui, where a local team takes you through what happens between the harvest and the cup, which is the part every farm tour skips. Roasting profiles, and how to taste properly, and then a cupping of highly differentiated coffees, including ones scored by Q-graders, which is the formal certification that decides what counts as specialty. Four hours. Up to fifteen people, in English or Spanish, with private transport, a translator, snacks, refreshments and tour insurance. Pick-up is free in El Poblado and may cost extra elsewhere. Lunch is not included.

The drive is so short you would not guess there is somewhere this quiet and this green inside the city. What you arrive at is a coffee farm surrounded by gardens, producing organic coffee of exceptional quality for reasons we go through on the way. After walking among the plantations, and hearing what it is that makes Colombia produce the coffee it does, you taste a cup of what this farm grew.

  3. What happens with the coffee after it is harvested? Get to…

What happens to coffee after it is picked? At a specialty micro-roastery you see the industrial process first-hand, and a local team shows you how the beans' best qualities get brought out.
