Both Fish Markets in One Morning, Old and New
Tokyo has two fish markets and most tours pick one. This covers both in four hours, with a licensed guide, which is what makes the comparison possible. Toyosu opened on 11 October 2018 on reclaimed land in the bay and took over the wholesale trade: three connected buildings, two for seafood and one for fruit and vegetables, all glass and stainless steel and viewed from purpose-built observation decks above the floor. You watch the selling and the processing from there. Then Tsukiji, which kept its outer market when the wholesale business left, and still looks and behaves like the old city: narrow lanes, boxes of sea urchin stacked in rows, vendors breaking down whole bluefin, pufferfish alive in tanks. Japan's better chefs still come here daily. Your guide explains the history and why the split happened. The walk also takes in Namiyoke Shrine, built to keep the waves off ground taken from the sea, and the Honganji temple, whose Indian-influenced 1934 architecture is unlike any other Buddhist building in the country. Afterwards you can stay in the market and eat at your own pace. Up to ten travellers, guided in English or Japanese, wheelchair accessible. Everything is on foot, and the guide meets you at Toyosu. Two things to be clear about: food, drink, transport and entrance fees are not included, and this is not the tuna auction tour, which the operator runs separately at five in the morning.

Toyosu Market
Toyosu Market (豊洲市場, Toyosu Shijō) opened on October 11, 2018 on the man-made island of Toyosu in the Bay of Tokyo. It took over the wholesale business from the aging Tsukiji Market and provides tourists with an opportunity to observe the market action and to dine at restaurants across its large, modern premises. The huge wholesale market consists of three main buildings: two buildings for seafood and one for fruits and vegetables. All buildings are connected with each other and Shijo-mae Station via walkways This tour does not include tuna auction viewing. Tsukiji Fish Market
Meet up with your guide at Tsukiji Honganji Temple, just outside the market’s main gate, in the morning. As you navigate your way through this labyrinth of all things seafood, learn from your guide about the market’s history and why many Japan’s top chefs visit here daily to pick up the freshest-quality ingredients. You never know what you might find as you stroll past the stalls of this amazing food center. You might see piles of sea urchin (uni) stacked neatly in boxes, watch as vendors carve massive Bluefin tuna or spot puffer fish floating in tanks. You can also visit the temple and shrine in Tsukiji and learn about the history of this land that was reclaimed from the sea to become a bustling market!

The history of Tsukiji is rich and you can lean about some of this history when you visit Namiyoke Shrine! This Shinto Shrine is meant to keep away the waves from this land reclaimed from the sea!

Buddhism has a long history in Japan and there are many temples all across the country. The Honwanji Temple is known for its unique construction and is a great opportunity to learn about Japanese Buddhism on your trip!
