From the IFC Center to Sheridan Square, Six Tastings

Three hours across Greenwich Village, twelve people at most, meeting at the IFC Center on Sixth Avenue, directly behind the West Fourth Street subway exit. The cinema itself is a converted Gothic Revival church, which tells you most of what you need to know about how this neighbourhood reuses its buildings. The Village earned its reputation twice, first as the address for writers, painters and folk singers who could not afford anywhere else, then as one of the most expensive places to live in Manhattan. The food held on through both. Six tastings. A New York bagel with schmear, boiled before it is baked, which is the entire argument for why the ones here are different. Street-style falafel. A slice of New York pizza, eaten the way it is meant to be eaten, folded and standing. A freshly baked cupcake and a gourmet cookie. And a signature dish the company only reveals on the day. Your guide lives here, and the route works through where locals actually eat rather than the storefronts that photograph well. The walk finishes on Seventh Avenue South near Bleecker, a few steps from the Christopher Street-Sheridan Square station on the 1 line. There is a fair amount of walking; wear shoes for it.
