Palmitas Coffee Without the Horse, Five Hours

The same farm in San Sebastian de Palmitas, the same fiambre, the same poncho, and one difference that matters: the horseback ride is optional here rather than built in. Which makes this the version to book if riding is not the point, or if somebody in the party would rather walk. It is an hour shorter and meaningfully cheaper. Palmitas is forty-five minutes northwest of Medellin and is still officially part of it: one of the city's five rural corregimientos, eight veredas and a small urban centre, up in the mountains between San Jeronimo, Bello and Heliconia. Five hours there. The coffee process explained on the finca, a tasting of special coffees, the paisa muleteer dress, and the fiambre for lunch, wrapped in a banana leaf the way the pickers eat it. You leave with the arriero diploma. Up to fifteen people, in English or Spanish, with hotel pick-up and drop-off, the professional guide, snacks, the tasting and travel insurance. Bring your identity document; the insurance requires it. Shoes for slippery ground, not shorts and not flip-flops. Sunscreen and repellent. It runs daily, in all weather, with no minimum group size. Not recommended if you have mobility difficulties. Photographs and video may be taken for the operator's promotional use.
