Six Thousand Casks and a Lodge That Still Keeps Coopers
An hour inside the largest ageing warehouse in the historic centre of Vila Nova de Gaia, with a guided visit and a tasting in the main room. The number that makes the visit is 6,518: that is how many pipes of port are ageing under this one roof, which is more than any other lodge on the hill holds. Standing among them is the point. Port is not made here, it is kept here, and the keeping takes decades. The house is also one of the very few in Gaia that still employs its own coopers. Casks are repaired, rebuilt and re-toasted on site rather than sent away, which matters because the wood is not a container: an ageing tawny takes its colour and its nutty character from years of slow oxidation through the staves, and the state of the cask decides the wine. The lodge is known for a Special Reserve that spends longer in wood than any other reserve port, which is what the scale of the warehouse allows. A team of tasters and oenologists follows each lot until it is judged ready. Up to ten guests, guided in English, sixty minutes. Wheelchair accessible throughout, including the approach, and suitable for all fitness levels.
