Mexico City

Ten tastings, seven of them food and three of them drinks, and the tour is organised along two axes at once. The first is geography. Mexican food is regional to a degree that surprises people, and this route covers Jalisco, Yucatan, Oaxaca, Sinaloa, Michoacan and Puebla, which are six different cuisines rather than six versions of one. The second is time. The dishes run from pre-Hispanic through to contemporary, which is a span of several thousand years and a corn-based cuisine that absorbed everything the Spanish brought without giving up its own base. And then there is the setting, which is the third thing and the best. You eat standing on the street, in the Mercado de Medellin, sitting in a restaurant, and in an apartment in Roma, which is four completely different ways of eating in one afternoon. The neighbourhood is Roma, so the architecture and the history come with it, and it finishes near Parque Mexico. Three hours, in English or Spanish, with the guide, all the food and drink, a hot chocolate and one alcoholic drink. Eighteen to drink. Wheelchair accessible throughout, prams fine.
