Mexico City

The short version, and the cheapest of the three bike tours this operator runs: three and a half hours, Roma Norte and Condesa, and nothing else. It starts as it should, with a coffee or tea and a concha straight out of the oven, which is what half of Mexico City has for breakfast, then tamales, homemade and proper. The traditional market comes next, for the produce, the colour and the vendors, and markets are the centre of daily life here in a way supermarkets are not. Then more food along the ride, and the operator deliberately does not list it all, because they would rather surprise you. Churros before the end, and a michelada to finish. The route runs through the colourful streets and the quiet corners of two neighbourhoods that most people only see the main avenues of. Eight people at most, in English, with the bike and everything on the set menu. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available. Anything you buy beyond the menu is your own. Not recommended if you have a heart condition.

  1. Av Sonora 164, Hipódromo, Ciudad de México

The meeting point is 164 Sonora Avenue, in Condesa. Look for a large black door across from Parque Mexico with 164 in white lettering, and PATIO CONDESA written above it. You will see food trucks inside, and there is a Farmacias del Ahorro on the corner.

  2. Condesa

Start the day with a coffee or a tea and a concha straight from the oven. A small moment, and a comfortable one, and about as local as breakfast gets.

  3. Roma Norte

Tamales. The real thing, homemade and full of flavour.

  4. Roma Norte

A traditional mercado: fresh, colourful and entirely local.

  5. La Condesa

More food, because Mexican cooking is enormously varied and consistently good.

  6. La Condesa

    A sugar break: churros.

  7. Condesa

The final toast. Micheladas, drunk with company and made with a heavy hand.

  8. Roma Norte

The charming streets and public spaces along the way.

  9. Av Sonora 164, Hipódromo, Ciudad de México
