Rome

Three hours through the tightest, oldest part of the centre, twelve people, meeting under the Brazilian flag outside the embassy at Piazza Navona 14. The square itself is the shape of the Stadium of Domitian, which it was built on top of: the buildings follow the line of the seating and Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers stands where the track was. Eight or more tastings. Two different homemade pizzas. Two Roman pastas. Supplì, the fried rice ball with mozzarella in the middle. Italian cold cuts and cheeses. A cannoli. Artisanal gelato. And one dish the company keeps off the listing and reveals on the day. Between the eating you pass Palazzo Farnese, one of the great High Renaissance palaces and now the French embassy, with a facade Michelangelo had a hand in. The Roman Ghetto, walled in 1555 and not opened until 1870, which is where the city's most distinctive kitchen developed. The Portico d'Ottavia, a second-century BC colonnade that linked two temples and later housed the fish market. And Campo de' Fiori, whose name means field of flowers because that is what was there before the square. It ends at Largo di Torre Argentina, where four Republican temples and the remains of Pompey's Theatre sit several metres below the modern street, along with a long-established colony of cats. Guided in English. The itinerary and menu can change with availability and weather. Minimum drinking age eighteen. No pets.
