Mexico City

Vegans and vegetarians in Mexico City are usually told the street food is not for them. This tour exists to argue otherwise, and it does it in the neighbourhoods where the argument actually matters. The operator is explicit about that: this is a grassroots tour, and it does not go to Condesa or Polanco or anywhere fashionable. Four middle and working-class neighbourhoods, three and a half kilometres, hidden places, street stalls and family-run brick-and-mortar shops. What you eat is the point. Vegan tacos in the versions that normally cannot be done: chicharron, al pastor and suadero, which are three of the great meat tacos of this city, made without meat and made well. Fake seafood. Tlacoyos and quesadillas. Tortas de milanesa. Gorditas of huitlacoche with nopales. Street corn. And churros. More than fifteen flavours, and it is all you can eat. The route takes in the Alameda Central, Paseo de la Reforma, which was modelled on the Champs-Elysees, and the Monumento a la Revolucion. It ends in the Zona Rosa, the city's LGBTQ+ quarter, over a beer or churros. Three hours, eight people at most, in English or Spanish. A beer is included, or an agua fresca if you do not drink. Gluten-free options. Wheelchair accessible, service animals allowed, prams fine. Children share food with their parents.
