Athens Daytime Food Tour: Central Market and Evripidou Delis

This is the daytime route through the food streets of central Athens, three hours on foot, and unlike the evening version it goes into the market. It starts at Monastiraki, in the square between the ruins and the stalls, then follows Athinas Street north. Athinas is the artery that links Monastiraki to the Central Market, lined with spice shops and old grocers. The market itself is the middle of the tour: fish on ice, meat on hooks, produce, and the specialist stalls locals use. Then Evripidou, the street of delicatessens, where the cured meats and the imported spices are. Along the way: olives with Cretan dakos, artisan cheeses, a savoury puff pastry pie or a souvlaki, a charcuterie tasting with red or white wine and tsipouro, and a seated meal of meze and regional dishes with wine or beer. Dessert is loukoumades or baklava. The walk ends near Aiolou, the old pedestrian street named after the god of the winds, with the Roman Agora and the Acropolis in the distance. Guided in English, up to fifteen people. Weekend and evening departures skip the market and some delis, which are shut then. Options for gluten-free, vegan, lactose-free and low-carb diets are limited.
