Athens Food Tour with a Coffee Reading and Your Own Souvlaki
Monastiraki and Psirri in one afternoon, and the operator has picked places rather than landmarks. It opens in a gallery that also holds the oldest record shop in Athens, in a café run by a mother and her two daughters that has not changed much since the nineties. Greek coffee is made in front of you, and afterwards someone reads the cup. The tasting there is a spoon sweet made from rose petals. Then Iroon Square, under a large mural, for the history of a district that used to make furniture, leather and metalwork. A bakery on Aristofanous still rolls its own phyllo and bougatsa dough and bakes the pies on site, sweet and savoury, spinach, cheese, meat, custard. On Aiolou, one of the oldest pedestrian streets in the city, the subject turns to Orthodox fasting and the olive-oil cooking it produced. Further along you build your own souvlaki, pork or chicken, on warm pita with tzatziki and a Greek beer. Two more stops: a shop by the Central Market that opened in 1886 and has sold dried figs, nuts and raisins ever since, and a family market where the charcuterie board comes with three Greek cheeses, cured meats, red and white wine and a spirit. The last thing is loukoumades, from one of the few places in Athens still frying them properly, with honey and cinnamon or with chocolate. Twelve people at most, two at minimum. Guided in English. Under-fours come free without food. Stops and tastings shift with the day and the season.
