Athens Food Walk: Varvakios Market, Psirri and 12 Tastings

The walk starts in Monastiraki Square, by the small church, and heads north into the streets where Athenians shop. Aiolou first, then Evripidou, the herb and spice street, then Varvakios Agora, the central market where fish, meat and produce are sold under one roof. Six stops, twelve tastings. Cured meats and cheese at a deli trading since 1922, olives and oil, honey, loukoumades fried to order in honey syrup and cinnamon, Greek coffee at a traditional shop on Athinas street, and pastries from a bakery in Monastiraki. Drinks come with the food. Groups are held to twelve people, small enough that the guide can stop and talk to the stallholders. The route takes in Psirri as well, where the tavernas and the artisan shops are, and ends back where it started. Come hungry: the operator asks you not to eat beforehand, and there is a lot of it. The tour runs in English. Vegetarians can be accommodated if they say so on the day; vegans and anyone avoiding gluten cannot. Eighteen is the minimum age for the drinks.
