Athens Market Food Tour with 20 Tastings and Two Sit-Down Meals
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
AthensThe meeting point is a pie shop on Athinas Street. From there the tour goes straight into Varvakios Agora, the covered market where the meat hangs in the open and the fish hall handles more than five tonnes a day. It is loud and it smells, and that is the point. After the market comes the laiki, the open-air farmers market, then Evripidou, the spice street, and three shops on it: a honey producer, an olive oil producer, and a deli with a reputation. You taste at each one and you can buy. Two of the twenty-odd tastings are sit-down meals. The first is souvlaki, or a plate at a family taverna, with yoghurt and local wine. The last is a full meze table with meat, fish, beans and vegetables, then Greek yoghurt with honey and a glass of ouzo. Timing changes the tour. Book from four in the afternoon and you will catch the market closing rather than working. On Sundays it is shut altogether, and the honey and oil tastings take its place. Groups run to twelve people, the guiding is in English, and most diets can be handled with notice, though vegan is not possible on Sundays.
