Athens Morning Food Tour: 15 Tastings from Pies to Pastourma
Four hours, starting at the fountain in Syntagma, and fifteen tastings that come to more than lunch. Breakfast first, at a pie shop: spanakopita with spinach and feta, and whatever else has come out of the oven that morning. Then a deli a few doors away for cheese, where the subject is how feta and the regional cheeses are actually made, tasted alongside Greek yoghurt. Monastiraki next, for pastourma and the cold cuts that go with it, heavy with spice. An olive shop follows, with Kalamata and the varieties that never leave the country. Then loukoumades, still hot. The Central Market comes in the middle of all this, not as a tasting but as a look at where the food comes from: the fish counters, the meat, the produce and the people buying it. Lunch is sit-down, home cooking at a traditional eatery. The tour ends in Psiri, in a café, with Greek coffee and the sweets that go with it. The group is capped at ten, guided in English. Dietary requirements need to be given at booking, and substitutions are available for vegetarians.
