Athens Secret Food Tour: 10 Tastings and One Secret Dish
Three hours across the old centre, with about a dozen tastings and one dish the guide keeps back until you are standing in front of it. The meeting point is under the flea market sign in Monastiraki, and the first part of the walk is Ifestou and the streets around it, where the clothing stalls, the souvenir shops and the antique dealers of Avissinias Square are. From there the route reaches the Central Market, the working food market of the city, then Hadrian's Library, built in 132 CE, and finally Plaka, the old quarter of neoclassical houses under the Acropolis. What you eat: tiropita, the flaky cheese pie; koulouri, the sesame bread ring Athens has for breakfast; olives and several olive oils; fresh Mediterranean seafood; tzatziki and other dips; fried zucchini balls; assorted meze; and galaktoboureko for the sweet. To drink, Greek coffee, local wine and ouzo. Up to twelve people, guided in English. There is a fair amount of walking, so comfortable shoes matter. The route and the menu change with what is open and what the weather allows, and dietary requirements need to be flagged before the day.
