Athens

Greek street food is what Athens eats standing up, and this three-hour walk covers the range of it, from Syntagma through the shopping district to Agia Irini square and Psyrri. It opens at a pie shop where the spanakopita is made on the premises, spinach and feta in filo, alongside tiropita with a cheese filling. Then souvlaki, grilled meat or the vegetarian version, wrapped in warm pita with tzatziki made from Greek yoghurt. Peinirli is the one most visitors have never heard of: a boat-shaped bread base, cheese melted into it, with Greek sausage or vegetables on top. There is a koulouri too, the sesame ring sold from carts all over the city, and a beer or a glass of wine with a liqueur. Sweet things close it. Loukoumades first, fried dough in honey syrup with cinnamon, then a baklava-style dessert served with ice cream, a combination you will mostly find in Greece. The group is around fourteen people. Guided in English. Vegetarians can be accommodated at every stop with notice; vegan, lactose-free, gluten-free and low-carb diets are not recommended. Nut-free options exist, without a guarantee against traces.
