Florence

The first Vespa tour in Italy, and the reason to take it over a coach is obvious the moment the group turns off the main road: back lanes in Chianti are made for a two-wheeler and hostile to anything larger. A minivan carries the group out of Florence, thirty-five minutes to Impruneta, a town that has made terracotta for centuries. Safety briefing, then you take the wheel. The route runs south to Strada in Chianti, in the middle of the Chianti Classico zone, and on to Chiocchio, a hamlet among vineyards and olive groves, with a support vehicle following the whole way. You choose the machine when you book: an original Piaggio Vespa on your own, a Vespa with a passenger, a lighter Piaggio Zip scooter, or a Fiat Topolino electric car if you would rather not ride at all. There is no air conditioning in the Topolino, only two fans and the open sides. Lunch or dinner is at a historic estate back in the Impruneta countryside: a Chianti tasting, the estate's own olive oil, and a three-course meal that follows the season. Six and a half hours in all, in English, with the minivan back to Florence at the end. The practical part. You need a valid driving licence, not a motorcycle one, and to be eighteen to drive or thirteen to ride pillion. A credit card is required: either €20 for vehicle damage cover or a €500 deposit, and no cash. Total load on a Vespa cannot exceed 170 kg including bags. No previous experience is required, but the operator can move anyone into the support vehicle at any point if they judge it unsafe, without a refund. It runs rain or shine. If it rains the tour continues in the minivan, and no refund is given for a ride shortened or cancelled by weather. Be at the meeting point fifteen minutes early to see what the day is doing. Vegetarian and vegan menus with 48 hours' notice.
