Athens

Most Athens food tours work the Monastiraki and Psirri end of town. This one starts under the Acropolis and heads the other way, into Koukaki, where the people who live in the district actually eat. The first stop is a family pastry shop for freddo espresso, the iced coffee Greece drinks all summer, with trigona panoramatos alongside: triangles of baklava phyllo soaked in syrup and filled with cream. Then handmade phyllo pies at a small family place where, if the timing is right, you can watch the pastry being made. Cheese, chicken, spinach, and whatever else is on that day. The charcuterie stop is a deli-grocery: Greek cheeses, cold cuts, olives and fresh bread, with tsipouro poured without limit and a glass of wine, finishing on Greek yoghurt with honey. After that, gyro or kebab from a place that bakes its pita every morning, wrapped and eaten with a small Greek beer. Loukoumades close it, honey and cinnamon or chocolate, at one of the few places still making them by hand. Six food tastings and two drink tastings in two and a half hours, guided in English. Twelve people at most, two at minimum. Under-fours join free without food. What is on offer shifts with the day and the season.
