Mercado San Angel First, Then Lucia's Kitchen

The same host, the same house, and one addition that changes the shape of the day: the market comes first. Mercado San Angel, which locals also call the Mercado Melchor Muzquiz, is a neighbourhood market rather than a tourist one, and walking it with a culinary historian is a different experience from walking it alone. You learn what the products are, which of them are pre-Hispanic and which arrived with the Spanish, and how a household here shops. Then back to Lucia's house in San Angel for the private class. Seasonal family recipes, made with what you just bought, and the history and the cultural weight behind each dish explained as you go, which is what a professor brings that a cook does not. You eat at her table, with a Mexican beer or a tequila. Four hours, in English or Spanish. The menu changes with the season, which is the point of shopping first.
