Pisa First, Then San Gimignano and Siena, with a Wine Lunch

FlorenceThe same three towns as the classic Tuscan day trip, taken in the opposite order, which puts Pisa at the start when the Piazza dei Miracoli is still quiet. Pisa first, off the coach and into the Field of Miracles: the cathedral, the baptistery, the Camposanto and the tower that leans about four degrees over fifty-six metres. Entrances to the cathedral, the tower and the baptistery are extra. From there the road runs past hilltop hamlets to San Gimignano, where lunch is a traditional Tuscan meal with four wines tasted alongside it. Then the town itself, a UNESCO site with its skyline of towers, the reason it is called the Manhattan of the Middle Ages. Piazza della Cisterna, paved in medieval stone around the old cistern, and the thirteenth-century walls with the countryside beyond them. Siena closes the day, reached through the Chianti countryside. A local guide walks the group through the medieval streets, past the Monte dei Paschi headquarters on Piazza Salimbeni, the oldest bank in the world, in a Renaissance palace dating to 1523, then into Piazza del Campo where the Palio has run for six hundred years, and up to the cathedral. Twelve hours. Up to eight people per booking, with a licensed tour leader working in English and Spanish and an air-conditioned coach. What you get depends on the options: the guided walk in Siena with earphones, the cathedral entrance with the Piccolomini Library and its Pinturicchio frescoes, and the lunch are each selected separately. Check-in is at 7.15 and it is not negotiable: arrive late and there is no refund and no reschedule. Bring photo ID. The audio guides become your responsibility once handed over, and losing one costs €80.

Piazzale Montelungo, Firenze
Piazzale Montelungo at 7.15am, at the end of the ramp that connects with the train station. An assistant in blue with Caf Tour and Gray Line logos will be waiting.
Piazza dei Miracoli
Tuscany starts at Pisa. Off the coach and onto the Field of Miracles, a green lawn with the white buildings standing on it.
Duomo di Pisa
Pisa Cathedral, formally Santa Maria Assunta: Romanesque, faced in marble, with carved detail, a bronze door and, inside, the pulpit by Giovanni Pisano.

Leaning Tower of Pisa
The Leaning Tower, nearly fifty-six metres tall and leaning about four degrees, which is what made it famous. Take the photograph, or walk off into the streets around it.

Camposanto
The Camposanto Monumentale, a cemetery built in the twelfth century, holding Roman and medieval sculpture, sarcophagi and frescoes. It was damaged in the Second World War and is still being restored.
Battistero di San Giovanni
The round baptistery, ringed by its arcade, built over several centuries and showing both Romanesque and Gothic hands. It sits beside the cathedral and the tower.

San Gimignano
San Gimignano after lunch: a medieval town on the UNESCO list, its street plan intact, with the tall narrow towers that got it the nickname of a medieval Manhattan.
Piazza Della Cisterna
Piazza della Cisterna, the triangular square at the heart of the town, paved in medieval stone around the old cistern that gave it its name, with towers and old buildings on every side.
Mura di San Gimignano
The town walls, thirteenth century, built for defence and for show. Walking them gives you the towers on one side and the Tuscan countryside on the other.
Piazza del Campo
Siena last, reached through the Chianti countryside: a hilltop city thick with art, monuments and views, and a pedestrian centre. A local guide takes the group along the medieval streets, past the oldest bank in the world, into Piazza del Campo where the Palio has run for six hundred years, and up to the cathedral.
Torre del Mangia
The Torre del Mangia, finished in 1348 and eighty-seven metres tall, standing beside the Palazzo Pubblico and visible from most of the city.
Duomo di Siena
Siena Cathedral, Gothic, with a facade covered in carving and an interior holding work by Donatello and Michelangelo among others, an inlaid marble floor and the Piccolomini Library. Entrance and the guided visit inside only if you booked that option.
