Plaka Backstreets Food Tour with Anafiotika and a Workers' Canteen

Plaka is where the coaches stop, and this tour spends five and a half hours proving that the food there is worth eating anyway, as long as you know which door to open. It starts at one of the best bakeries in Athens, with handmade specialities whose recipes go back centuries, then turns into the quieter lanes behind the monuments for an olive oil tasting at a small specialist deli. The route continues through Anafiotika, stopping for regional products and for meatballs in a tomato sauce scented with cumin. Near Syntagma there is Greek kebab made by the family that sells it, and a workers' canteen where you do not order from a menu but point at what is in the pots. The last stop is one of the oldest patisseries in the city, whose desserts come from recipes brought over from Hydra. Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman rule each left a mark on how this neighbourhood eats, and the guide connects the two. Seven people at most, guided in English.
