Athens

Two and a half hours and five things to eat, which makes this the shortest of the street food walks in the centre and the cheapest. Koulouri first, the sesame ring Athens buys from carts on the way to work. Then spanakopita, spinach and feta in crisp filo, still warm from a bakery oven. Souvlaki or gyro after that, whichever you prefer, in pita. Peinirli fourth, the boat-shaped Greek pizza with a cheese mix baked into crisp dough, which most people have never seen before. And loukoumades to finish, golden outside and soft in the middle. A beer or a soft drink comes with it. The route goes from Monastiraki into Psirri, up Athinas Street, along Evripidou past the spice shops and the delis, through the Central Market and out along Aiolou, where the Roman Agora is below and the Acropolis further up. The market keeps its own hours: it shuts on weekdays and Saturdays after four in the afternoon, and all day Sunday. Departures at those times do not go in. Fifteen people at most, guided in English, at a relaxed pace with regular stops. The route is wheelchair and stroller accessible, though the old centre has narrow pavements. Vegetarian friendly, with limited options for gluten-free, vegan, lactose-free and low-carb diets.
