Syntagma to Monastiraki Food Tour: 10 Shops and 15 Tastings

The tour begins at Syntagma, at the main entrance of the Public store on the lower side of the square, and crosses the old centre on foot. Plaka first, under the Acropolis, then Monastiraki with its flea market and Ottoman mosque, then Psirri, where the workshops that once made furniture and leather have turned into bars. Ten food shops along the way, fifteen tastings, and between them they come to a meal. Olives and olive oil with an explanation of what to look for, cheese and cured meats, spices from the shops on the way to the market, souvlaki, koulouri, bougatsa filled with cream, loukoumades, and a Greek coffee made the slow way. One stop is Athens' central food market, where locals buy their fish, meat and produce. It is a working market and the tour treats it as one. Groups run to twelve people, and the guide works in English or French. Vegetarians are catered for and other diets on request, but severe allergies cannot be accommodated. Eat a light breakfast.
