Vernaccia and Chianti: Two Wineries and San Gimignano

FlorenceA ten o'clock start, which is later than most Tuscan day trips and the reason to pick this one if you would rather not be at a bus terminal before dawn. Two wineries, and both of them near San Gimignano rather than in Chianti, which changes what is in the glass. The first is a family estate at Ulignano, pouring Chianti, Super Tuscans and Vernaccia di San Gimignano, the white the town is known for and that most visitors never taste. The second is five kilometres from the town itself, with a cellar visit and three wines: Vernaccia again, Chianti Colli Senesi and a rosé. Eight wines across the day, along with three extra virgin olive oils, balsamic vinegar and Tuscan snacks, bruschetta with tomatoes among them. Then San Gimignano itself, the medieval town with the towers, its cathedral, the Collegiata and the streets between them. Free time to walk it. Seven hours. Back in Florence at five o'clock. Up to fifteen people, in a private air-conditioned minivan with an English-speaking driver-guide. Minimum age eighteen. The tour needs four participants to run: below that, the operator offers a private version with a supplement. Lunch is not included, so eat in San Gimignano or before you leave.

Piazza della Calza, 1, Firenze
The Oltrarno car park, in front of Porta Romana, by the blue P of the parking sign, at 9.45. Departure is at ten sharp.
Florence
Meet at the P parking sign in Piazza della Calza by Porta Romana at 9.45, for a ten o'clock start, which suits anyone who would rather not lose the morning. Your guide is the one in the purple T-shirt. About an hour to the first winery, with the day's plan and a good deal of Tuscan history covered on the way, and vineyards and olive groves out of the window.
Tuscany
The drive crosses Tuscany: rolling hills, vineyards, olive groves, cypresses and villages, which is the reason the region looks the way it does in photographs.
Ulignano
The first winery, a family estate in the village of Ulignano near San Gimignano. Guided tastings of Chianti, Super Tuscans and Vernaccia di San Gimignano, with local food alongside.
San Gimignano
The second winery, five kilometres from San Gimignano, with views over the countryside. A visit to the cellars, then three wines: Vernaccia, Chianti Colli Senesi and a rosé.
San Gimignano
San Gimignano, called the medieval Manhattan for its towers. Piazza del Duomo, the Collegiata, and the Torre Grossa, the tallest of them, with the view from the top. Narrow cobbled streets, artisan shops, and saffron, which the town is known for.
Florence
About an hour back from San Gimignano to Florence, and a drop-off at the starting point around five.
