Florence

Six hours, eight people at most, and the day is built around a Vespa rather than around a coach. An air-conditioned minivan takes the group out of Florence to the starting point in Chianti. Then a training session, which is short but genuine: nobody gets on a Vespa until the guide is satisfied they can operate one. After that the ride, through the back roads, with stops where the view is worth the photograph. The medieval village on the route is one of the most striking in Tuscany, with its towers and narrow streets, and the guide walks the group through the main sights before letting everyone loose. Dondoli, whose gelato has won the world championship, is there if you want it. Back to the Vespas, and then lunch at a local winery: a light Tuscan meal with the estate's wines paired to it. A licensed guide and a driver come with the group, and the whole thing runs in English, Italian or Spanish. You need your original driving licence and to be at least eighteen to ride. It is family-friendly, with child seats available, but it is not recommended with a spinal injury or cardiovascular problems, and moderate fitness is expected. Private pick-up and drop-off can be added for a supplement.
