Athens Meze Cooking Class: Seven Small Plates and Phyllo
Meze is Greek food built for sharing: a table covered in small plates that everyone reaches into at once. The class makes seven of them, in one evening. The work is done in pairs, which keeps it social rather than instructional. One of the seven involves making phyllo pastry from scratch and shaping it, which is the part most people have never attempted and the reason the technique is worth learning here rather than reading about. When the cooking is done the table is laid with everything at once, the way it would be at home, with plenty of Greek wine and soft drinks alongside. The studio is a converted loft in the centre, on the fifth floor at Evripidou 90, bright, with the Acropolis visible from it. Three hours, in English, up to ten people. You leave with the recipes for all seven dishes. Vegetarian and vegan menus can be arranged with notice, and the operator will discuss a different start time or a private class if you ask.
