Marrakech

The Sahara is a long day and a half from Marrakech and back, which for most trips is time you do not have. Agafay is thirty kilometres, and it is a desert. Not a sand one. Agafay is stone: pale rock and dust folding away toward the High Atlas, which changes colour as the sun goes and is a different sort of beautiful from dunes. The evening is a camp there. A nomad tent, a campfire, and Moroccan hospitality of the kind that involves being handed tea before you have taken your coat off. Welcome tea and pastries, then harira, salads, tagine, couscous, seasonal fruit and more tea. Vegetarian options run. There is a fire show after dark, and the sky, which thirty kilometres out of a city is a different sky entirely. A camel ride is available if you choose that option, and there is a stop at a Berber women's argan oil cooperative on the way, which is where the oil actually comes from and where the money stays. Five hours door to door, with hotel pick-up and drop-off in an air-conditioned vehicle, a local guide, dinner, mint tea and water. Back in Marrakech around 22:30. Up to fifteen people, in English, French, Spanish or Arabic. The camel ride is not recommended if you are pregnant or have back trouble.

  2. Medina of Marrakesh

The tour heads for the Agafay desert and a dinner under the stars. After the pick-up from your hotel, you are driven out to a camp there, where you watch the sun go down and are given the kind of welcome Moroccan hospitality is known for. Dinner is in a nomad tent around the campfire: welcome tea and pastries, harira, salad, beef and chicken tagine, seasonal fruit and tea.

  3. Agafay

The sunset and the night sky over the Agafay desert, thirty kilometres outside the city. You do not need to go all the way to the Sahara for a desert sunset. This is a stone desert, with the Atlas Mountains behind it, and the evening starts at the ecolodge, in a comfortable tent, with a traditional Moroccan dinner as the light goes and the stars come out.

  4. High Atlas Mountains

The view over the High Atlas and the desert.
