Maeklong Railway Market and Damnoen Saduak by Train and Boat
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
BangkokTwo markets in one morning, and the way you reach them is half the point. Maeklong Railway Market is built along a live railway line. The stalls stand on the tracks, and when a train is due the traders fold their awnings back and pull the produce in, then put it all out again once it has passed. You arrive by local train, which means the view from the carriage as it comes in is part of the visit. The group does not ride back out. Damnoen Saduak is reached by long-tail boat along the canal, past the houses and the fruit plantations on the banks, and it is the best known of the floating markets in Thailand. A paddle boat through the market itself is included. Seven hours in all, in an air-conditioned vehicle, with an English-speaking guide. Japanese and German guides can be booked, sharing the same bus as the English group. Lunch is not included, and the drop-off is at the Bangkok Experience Lounge by BTS Chong Nonsi rather than at hotels. The operator's own advice is worth taking: the 6.00 and 6.30 departures have fewer visitors and leave more time at both markets.
