Old Siam Food Tour: Khlong Boat, Tuk Tuk and Nang Loeng Market

The same operator as the Chinatown tour, in a different half of the city and with three modes of transport before you have finished eating. It opens with a khlong boat, a local water taxi up one of the canals, into a district of old Bangkok that few visitors reach. Then a tuk tuk through the neighbourhood eateries, and after that it is on foot, around Nang Loeng, a land market that has been feeding this part of the city since 1899. Fifteen tastings or more. Hoi tod, crisp and fried. Crispy pork belly. Kanom buang yuan, sharp and salad-like. Miang kham, the leaf-wrapped mouthful that fires off in several directions at once. Thai curry, and a dozen more from vendors who cook one dish and nothing else. Between the food there is the shell of one of Bangkok's oldest cinemas, and a place where royal dessert recipes are still made. Four hours, eight guests at most, with bottled water and soft drinks included and the boat and tuk tuk fares covered. Alcohol is not included and there is no hotel transfer. It ends outside Nang Loeng Market in the old town. It does not suit vegetarians, pescatarians or anyone avoiding pork, nor shellfish, peanut or severe allergies, nor severe gluten intolerance, since soy sauce carries traces. Lactose intolerance and no-beef diets are fine. It runs in all weather.
