The Greek Kitchen sits on Athinas Street, two short flights up from a suitcase shop, and the people who teach there are home cooks rather than restaurant chefs. That sets the tone: this is how Greek food gets made in a flat, not in a professional kitchen. The four hours start with a thirty-minute walk to the Athens Central Market, a few minutes away, to see what is on the stalls and pick up the seasonal snacks that get eaten during the class. Then everyone cooks, hands on, and sits down to eat what they made. Bread and olives are on the table at every class, and each person gets 250ml of Greek red or white. You leave with the recipes. Ten people at most per booking. The class runs in English or Greek. Almost any dietary requirement can be worked around, because the dishes adapt. The classroom is up two flights of stairs, and the market walk is outdoors, so comfortable shoes and sun protection are worth having.
