Yaowarat Night Food Tour: 12 Tastings from Seven Stalls

Yaowarat is at its best after dark, when the shutters go up on the grill stalls and the neon starts. This tour spends three hours on it, and the guide is licensed rather than improvised. Seven stalls and eateries, twelve tastings or more. Noodles in tomato soup with fish balls. A few dim sum. A Chinese herb drink, bitter and medicinal. Seafood, cooked at the kerb. Roll noodles in a peppery soup with crispy pork. Thai ice cream. And black sesame dumplings in warm ginger soup at the end. Between the food there is the neighbourhood itself: the people who run the stalls, the stories that come with them, and the cultural landmarks along the way. Thai-Chinese cooking has been developing here for generations, and the guide traces where each dish came from. Groups take up to eight, guided in English, with bottled water included.
